Our next stop was pretty much a 2-day layover in Cambodia. The airport was really nice as it looked more like a 5-star resort than an international airport and we soon found out that you pay for the luxury in the $25/person airport fee upon departure. We'd prefer an old red barn if we had our druthers. The people were supernice in the area and it seemed everyone had some sort of function revolving around sunset. Apparently, it's big out there whether you have a view or not. We took that opportunity to try some of their local drinks. Cambodia was the first Asian country that had good beer in Angkor brand beer. The prices were super cheap everywhere we went too. We had dinner at the hotel we were staying at for about $6 for the both of us and would usually eat for about $5 combined. The restaurant across the street was advertising filet mignon for $4! We never had a chance to go. The day we went to Angkor Wat, it was raining and raining hard. We actually liked its sister attraction Angkor Thom better than Angkor Wat
The food across the board was really good and you couldn't beat the price. Our hotel set us up at a buffet dinner with traditional Apsara dancing as entertainment. The whole show was fabulous and the food was fantastic with various salads, local meats, soups, fresh exotic fruit, interesting Cambodian egg pancakes, and grilled meat skewers. All of this came for the hefty price of $10/person. Later on that night we headed out to the nightspots. They had a drag that had a lot of eclectic bars. We stopped at one called Temple Bar. Rachel liked the name and décor. We ended up getting the 2-for-1 special with themed cocktails. I ordered the "Tomb Raider" cocktail, what else?
Angkor Thom
. They had four-headed stones and although they started on a restoration project, we saw this green mildew on much of the buildings, which only added to its intrigue and character. It was seriously like being in Tomb Raider and the inclement weather kind of added something mysterious and eerie to the whole experience so we took the rain as a good thing. Incidentally, Angelina Jolie shot the movie Tomb Raider in this location. This is where she decided to adopt kids. Rachel wasn't in as benevolent of a spirit on the idea of adopting at this point in our lives. Rachel, What Would Angelina Do?
