A couple of South Africans we met in call this place Dirty Durban and, although we arrived at night, we could understand what they were talking about. Thank goodness we only stayed one night. Rachel was actually pretty comfortable when we were in town and I was a little nancy girl. Maybe it was because she was half asleep while I was driving, but when we were driving in the downtown area there were shady people in street corners, prostitutes being pimped, slum, and garbage.
Oh yeah...and my driving didn't help out matters either. Having an American drive a stick on the left hand side of the road in the passenger seat is simply crazy. First off, I think South Africans are dyslexic because who does that. They really need to notify the rest of South Africa whenever an American drives in the country like an emergency sig alert. After stalling multiple times in the downtown streets of Durban and turning into oncoming traffic, I started wondering if we should just tow the car to our hotel. Unfortunately, I came to find out that our AAA membership doesn't quite work in South Africa.
The next day we were off to Eshowe. I liked the highway drive because I didn't have to switch gears - I was a champ in 4th and 5th gear. It takes a lot of skill to stay in 5th for 40 minutes believe me.
