An early wake up this morning as Dad and I headed off to catch the ferry to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. On the train this morning we were treated to a 20 second piece by a trio of random African American acapella singers. They could have been good, but were too short and we couldn't scramble to get our cameras out quick enough.
Our tickets for the ferry were for 9am and we arrived at 9.01am but as we found out the ferry leaves every 20 minutes and the time is just a guide of when to come. As I hadn’t had breakfast I had one of those enormous pretzels and an apple juice. Dad started saying he felt he was a bit queasy as we got onto the boat which wasn’t a great sign, but we headed off to Liberty Island all the same. Miss Liberty is an amazing statue made of copper which has turned to its current colour over the years and didn’t actually begin like that
We left Ellis Island back to Manhattan and joined Maurice who was waiting in an expensive hotel lobby. From there we headed to the Empire State Building (although didn’t go to the top) and then to Grand Central Station. The Empire State Building is certainly an impressive piece of engineering and has lots of security and one has to wonder how annoying it would thus be to work there every day and go through airport-like security. Grand Central Station doesn’t service much anymore but is still a well preserved and kept building unlike most train stations in New York.
That night we went to see the Broadway show 'Avenue Q’ which is basically a muppet musical. It was quite humorous and pleasant to listen to. The songs are catchy and make interesting points about social situations. It is designed for adults, with some swearing and adult themes, sometimes going a little bit far, but overall was a worthwhile show to see.

. We had an audio set as part of the tour and Dad disappeared as he listened to the parts he was up to. Once I had finished the 20 minute tour there was Dad sitting down looking fairly sick. We went up to the café and dad headed to the bathroom and had a drink. Slowly he started to feel better and we were on our way to Ellis Island. This island is where all immigrants were processed before entering the country. It was a very interesting museum illustrating the joy and hardships experienced by those immigrants in the early days.We left Ellis Island back to Manhattan and joined Maurice who was waiting in an expensive hotel lobby.
