We got settled and decided to just spend the rest of the day hanging out at camp. There are lots more larger palo verde and mesquite trees here, along with our favorite Saguaro Cactus. Some of the saguaro are in good bloom now, and are quite impressive. The blossoms show at the top of this towering cactus. They are white with a yellow center. A photo will be showing up on flickr in a day or two, among others, when I get them edited.
In the evening, the full moon rose invitingly over the mountains in the near distance. Later in the night, the eclipse happened, but we didn't catch it this time.
The wind has been much calmer and the temperature just a skosh cooler, but still warm like you'd want it to be.
The sunset was another postcard type, as Lynn mentioned, and is part of why we keep coming back here. The night was quiet, interspersed by the howling of the many coyotes here. We've seen a lot of rabbits, with their "mule deer" ears, too, so I guess the natural balance may have been achieved in terms of "hunting/gathering." No real reptiles have shown yet except for the small lizards that are so common.
This morning, Tuesday, we drove to the Visitor Center and picked up a trail map and took a hike of just under three miles. We took the Overton Trail and climbed a bit on the Go John. It was a bit cloudy and comfortable and overall a nice day for a hike. There are lots of rental horses on the trails this time of year, so the dust on the trails is quite deep and nasty. It didn't seem to bother the horses, but didn't appeal to either of us. Clean up just took a bit longer when we got back to the Sooby.
Lynn had brined a pork loin roast overnight and I had the privilege of roasting it on the Weber Q. It turned out great, served with ciabata rolls, sautéed pea pods and a green salad. We can't wait to try it with a bit of smoke on our larger BBQ at home. Lots of spices make for a tasty brine.
Tomorrow we head back into Scottsdale for a time of shopping. It seems that we often need a few small items in audition to replenishing our stock of food. Both of us like to shop, so it's a friendly chore to get done. Seriously...
Word we have received has it that spring has actually arrived back him in Helena. I check the daily weather and am not sure if I believe it. We won't be back for a few weeks, so I'd like some verification of when the temps get up into the eighties. Can it happen? You know it can... Will it happen? That is another question entirely. Enough from me this evening...
