On the Saturday following Christmas, friends came by and we went bowling. Sounds like fun, no? Well, to say the least, it WAS interesting. Lynn and I, with Lisa's able assistance, figured that the last time WE had bowled was in 1988. Yep, that's twenty-five years ago. The meantime didn't do a lot to improve our style, but we didn't hurt ourselves.....much. My "hook" to the left of the lane survived the years and Lynn's tricky thumb helped her to do some creative work on the hardwoods. Lynn had actually bowled in the past. In fact, I remember watching her bowl on a team and picking her up at the Star Lanes in Butte, back in the Dark Ages. I am an admitted abject failure, but willing to give it a shot.
We all had fun, especially the kids, who are fourteen and eleven years of age. It's always fun to observe how young folks operate in public doing something new. It's a good time to learn, if you know what I mean.
Rich was the best bowler of our group of eight. He easily scored in the triple digits each game. I'll not comment on how each of us less-experienced folks did.
We've been continuing to get our exercise in the neighborhood with and without Madison. I find that if I get three or four miles of walking four or five times a week, that I can do pretty well at maintaining my weight. The weather in the Damp Zone never got so bad that this was not possible. I particularly like walking during workdays when guys from the Trades are building on the new houses. They are a pretty friendly lot, especially in the mornings before they get worked out. They patiently answer my greetings and tolerate my simple questions. That's a good thing...
The homes in the area are mostly completed and sold, but a few remain, as well as a few lots that haven't been sold. Prices range from the mid-300s to the mid-400s. The view lots bring a tidy sum, I'm sure. Enough about the real estate...
New Year's Eve dinner, if you're curious, was Alaskan King Crab and Prime Cut Filet Mignon. Rich, as usual, did an excellent job on the steaks using just the right seasoning and not having any fear of serving a Rare steak. Lynn and I prefer to see a bit of the original Cow Color. Rich did a fine job. I'm not much of a Crab Leg fan, but the others did their share of ooohing and aaahing, so I assume they were tasty too. We had bread from the Metropolitan Market in Tacoma. It was an exceptionally good sourdough. Tasty and chewy it was.
Apparently, there were serious fireworks at midnight, but you couldn't prove it by Lynn or me. We slept through the whole thing. How can that happen?? We both hear well, I a bit better than Lynn, so I'm guessing that it's a lack of interest. Rich and Lisa must have a better appreciation of pyrotechnics. Go figure.
We got out of Auburn, in the usual fog, at 9:30AM. I drove about a hundred miles or so and Lynn took the wheel. We had lots of fog, off and on, but the Summit of Snoqualmie it was relatively clear. Traffic was only semi-psychotic. Driving early on a holiday seems to be the best way to escape the area. It worked for us.
We got into Coeur d'Alene, Idaho at about 2:30PM. By stopping at a Rest Area and having cheese, crackers, fruit and such, we save room for our Dinner and also save a lot of time. We're at a La Quinta Inn, which is just across the road from the Tomato Street Restaurant. It's one of two restaurants, the other being in Spokane. It's Italian fare and some of the best food we've found anywhere. If you're in the area, its well worth checking out. Lynn had the special and I had the Blackened Cajun Chicken Fettuccini. Since it's New Year's Day, we "shared" Grandma's Bread Pudding, which had a large scoop of vanilla ice cream temporarily residing atop. What can I say? Excellent!
We'll head out of hear fairly early, since we lose the hour that we temporarily had at Lisa's. I have a friend in the hospital in Missoula and hope to stop by for a quick visit there.
Again, thanks for checking us out. I'll be heading to the lake soon and will check in again from there. Happy 2014!
