It rained off and on during the night and continued this morning. It's so wet that I was forced to abandon the Birkenstocks and revert to my Sketchers.

We set our for Notre Dame at about eleven.  The church on campus is the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.  It was constructed in 1871, several years after the university was founded in 1848 by the Holy Cross Fathers.

We parked across campus near the bookstore and walked about a quarter mile to the church.  It's a beautiful edifice with stained glass windows imported from France.  At one time it had the largest collection of such glass outside of France.

But... the building was just the beginning.  The highlight of the day was the music.  The video of inside is accompanied by the organ, a violin and a flautist.  The music just got better.  There's a folk choir of at least sixty students.  I was truly enthralled with it all.  Everybody in the congregation sang and seemed to really be in the spirit.  The priest, who hailed from Virginia, had an accent that I'm beginning to really miss.  His homily was heartfelt, meaningful and just the right length.  No "get it over" about it.

Later we visited the bookstore and shopped before going to lunch near the campus.  We found Five Guys and Fries very close and had a fine lunch.  Being a Sunday, it was quiet there when we arrived and gradually a good crowd appeared.  The food, simple though it was, was very good.  Since the weather was so poor, we didn't go to the ND stadium, but did see it from a distance.  No sign of Lou Holz.  Where the heck is he anyway?

We shopped a bit in Elkhart and now we're snug, cozy and dry in our house.  We'll be setting off in the morning for Wisconsin.  Lynnie has family in WI, all deceased, but we intend to visit the gravesites near Berlin.
