tickling the spine of the appalachians 'neath a stormshudder sunday: greenville, ashville, bristol, chihowie, johnson city--all aboard!  we hustle this highway eye'ing these towns through our rectangular peepholes streaked with chocolate fingers.  the car is asleep and i'm alone with dave brubeck and nina simone and as i wing the baldface cliffs, the redbricked homes, the cows grazing a hillside meadow, the congregants scurrying into milkwhite chapels,  i feel disappointed that i can't pull over and grab a handful of this moment, perhaps sharing a sweet tea with the old lady sitting on her porch as she shares local gossips with me and lulu while marley plays with her dog.  so instead, i unroll my window and allow my hand to lazily blow in the wind, much like a fisherman languidly fingers  the billowing wake as he cuts through the sea.  but like him when he grasps at the suns reflection in the waves, i too come up emptyhanded, and these moments and these towns, which for a splitsecond seemed to contain the sum total of the world's wisdom will be replaced by the incidentals and the trivialities of a life that...

impressed this dude though his wifey though it a bit too out in the middle of nowhere--not much work for an aspiring interior designer...but look at all the cool bars and streets peopled with coffee drinkers!  yeah, missmarley, not being a coffeedrinker or old enough to legally buy booze wasn't that keen on this drabgrey mountain town either...i quickly turned my attention to the baby, hoping he would sample my wares, and offered him images of father and son sundaystrolling main street, gelatos in hand, happyhipsters incarnate, but 'trane just howled for his shit in his diaper to be changed...

late night when we pulled into wyethville, va...
