Took a night bus northwest to Chiang Mei. Comfortable, air conditioned but a macho driver with more guts than sense. He liked to play chicken with oncoming traffic especially fellow bus drivers. The road was well paved with one lane in either direction not divided. Hard packed dirt shoulderr on either side. Our driver would accelerate and pass traffic in the oncoming lane and refuse to give way to oncoming traffic forcing them to be 'chicken' and steer off onto the shoulder which did not cause an upset.
However though I usually handle even rather dicey travel trips with some cool this time I was definitely anxious. Kept thinking suppose the other driver is equally macho and gutsy. We were going at least 60 mph. Years later back in US I happened upon a small back page article. Two buses along that road collided head on killing I think all aboard.
Anyway Chaing Mei was a very pleasant town. Not the congestion and commercialism of Bangkok. Visited some PCV posted there. found a cheap clean hotel and had some great food. Explored the town.
