Sun 28 July 2002 Said goodbye to Susan Barklay & others. Took some photos with UPMRC staff.
Then I left Nablus with a young Japenese ISMer. We took a taxi to the Huwara checkpoint. Walked few hundred meters through no man's land. Got another taxi to a nearby village where we negotiated for another taxi via back roads & fields to Jerusalem. Arrived at Faisal Hostel & checked into a dorm bed.
The taxiis were quite expensive. The drivers with good reason consider the trip rather dangerous. They can not use the highways reserved for Jews only. None of the back roads we were forced to take were paved, often pot holed or deliberately damaged. Sometimes the driver had to detour into olive groves around impassable sections.
The driver could only go to the edge of expanded Jerusalem. Here we had to hire another taxii for the final leg to Damascus Gate.
