Manali Vale [haiku]
Sun on snowy peaks.
Crystal streams thru pine forests.
Memorable vale.
Turbulent Beas
Drains the pine shaded valley,
Tranquil and lovely.
Spent about five days here late November 1980. I had visited here the previous summer. It was Ed's first visit. It was a high point of our trip. A small delightful village. Mild sunny days, freezing nights.
Ran into Phoebe a very pretty Australian girl whom I'd met in the Shakti Hotel in KTM. She was traveling with her six months old biracial son and had rented some rooms in Manali where we stopped to pay a visit. It was near a hot spring bath where we spent a soothing spell.
Hiked the lovely scented evergreen forests and climbed the hills.
Years later in the London Underground I sat opposite a young woman who was wearing one of the distinctive square box like hats worn by most women in the Kulu Valley. Sure enough that's were she had gotten it.

01 Pine [deodar?] forest on edge of Manali Bazaar, Himal Pradesh, India
Late Nov. 1980 L01

02 Taken of Manlai Bazaar from hike up hill NW of it. L02

03 To the North of hills newly snow covered. Not far from Mandimba Mandir. L03

04 Ed Waters on East bank of Beas River which flows thru the Kulu Valley. Photo is shot to the North. L04

05 Looking S from road just above E bank of Beas River. Art in foreground. The Beas is one of India's major rivers. It drains the Kulu Valley, originating in the Himalyas. Manali is at the head of the valley. Rohtung Pass beyond leading to Ladakh, I think.
