Had reservation for hostel in Riga and ticket for 10 AM bus there. Up at 7AM packed and off not really hung over.

very good bus trip on EuroLines bus -- four and half hours. Only one stop. good roads, intersting countryside. Much forested. seems not very populated.

arrived Riga bus station. Sketch map confusing. Had difficult time findiing hostel. Hot, very heavy pack, exhausted. Also seems I have caught a bit of a chest infection but so far not bad. May beat it before it gets worse. First such along the way.

Baltic states
Thanks for your good wishes. I rarely get sick but this kind of caught up with me a hammered me for a few days. Residue still to clear up but feel much better.

\have only visited their capitals, Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius, but Baltic states definitely worth checking out. All have colorful well preserved historic 'old towns.' \people are friendly, good hostels but prices close to those of their previously more prosperous neighbors, ~Finland, etc. All happy to be rid of Communism and Russian overlords.

How many speak russian?
Would love to go to one of the baltic states but would be afraid of not being able to talk to anyone
Do most of the people speak russian? or even english?

Not a problem
I found many or most of the young people in Estonia, Latvia speak English quite well. Fewer but many in Lithuania // or rather Tallinn, Riga and Vilnius.

Well worth visiting but as expensive as Western Europe and Finland.
