There is something about the sunshine that is cruel and vindictive. It lures you into a false sense of security. Everything seems better when its sunny out. Your problems seem that little less stressful when the sun shines. Everyone is happier, birds are trying to have sex with bees and all is well in the world. That is, until that night when sunshines evil brother, sunburn makes an appearance.
In Ko Samui on our second day we were hitting the beach and our skin was going to rise from the realms of whiteness into a glowing brown like a Phoenix rising from the flames. Factor 50 no thank you, Factor 30 good luck. I recommended factor 20 but Caroline says "Oh No" Factor 15 it was. In hind sight, going out into the the Thai sunshine for 5 hours with factor 15,we were probably asking for trouble, and trouble we got.
I suppose I didn't help things by forgetting to put sun cream on my face(Its a mistake anyone could make) only realizing after about three hours when it was far too late
The next day after a very restless night(Sleeping with sunburn is like sleeping on hot coals) we try to figure out what to do. We couldn't go to the beach because we would only aggravate the burn. It was thirty five degrees out so even walking in the shade would make it worse. So what do we do? We lie in bed watching TV. We have traveled ten thousand miles to enjoy ourselves and we are holed up in our room, covered in after sun, cursing the evil genius that is the sun and cursing our own stupidity. That evening I decide that I'm not going to let the sunburn defeat me so I head out and rent a scooter or "The hog" as i like to call her.
One hundred and twenty five cc of pure unadulterated fun
Given a day our sunburn started to cool a little and we were able to plan our next destination - Ko Phangan, home to the legendary full moon party. Unfortunately we weren't going to be able to make a full moon party but we still had a few days to spend on the Island. We were going to get to the island by boat, it is about 12km north of Ko Samui. It took us half an hour to get there by boat and the weather as we were crossing was beautiful but just as we got to Ko Phangan we could see the big dark clouds moving in which meant only one thing, rain and lots of it. It was a scramble to get to our gust house before the downpour, because even though we were dry inside the tuk tuk, our luggage was getting soaked on the roof. We make it to our guest house just as the rain starts. Firts impressions of Ko Phangan are it is a lot more back packerish than Ko Samui. Ko Samui reminded us of a resort you would find in Spain but Ko Phangan had a lot more laid back feel about it .... if this is true we'll just have to find out

. As i said earlier sunshine is cruel and vindictive. We made it back to our room at about 5 pm and we knew that we had gotten a little burnt. If only it was that simple. Sunburn takes 4 to 5 hours to mature. With each passing minute this burning sensation grows all over your body. It is like sticking your arm into a fire(hence the "Burn I suppose). As well as the burning sensation growing, with serious sunburn you start to get headaches, feel dizzy and feel nauseas. Well by the end of the night myself and Caroline were feeling all of these. Not good. Glowing brown we were not, Bright red and in a lot of pain we were. DAMN YOU SUNSHINE.The next day after a very restless night(Sleeping with sunburn is like sleeping on hot coals) we try to figure out what to do. . It was a Honda, it was black, it was automatic and it was BEAUTIFUL. Nothing makes you feel more like a man than having some sort of motorized machine under your control. It can be a remote control car, a power tool, a motor bike, a car. If you are controlling something motorized you feel like a man. With all thoughts of my sunburn being ignored I set off around Ko Samui with "Born to be wild" playing in my head. Oh Id say the locals had a laugh at me with my big blue helmet (None of the locals wear helmets), sure my scooter would struggle to make it up hills, sure as pick ups passed me out, the people in the back would point and laugh. sure driving on the Thai roads scared the crap out of me but none of that mattered, all that mattered was that me and the hog were a team and Ko Samui was our playground. "Get your motor running, heading on the highway, looking for adventure, and whatever comes our way, BORN TO BE WILD"Given a day our sunburn started to cool a little and we were able to plan our next destination - Ko Phangan, home to the legendary full moon party.
