Where I stayed

Once again awoke hopeful at 3.30, but a quick peek out the window confirmed that it was still rainy and foggy, and definitely not worth another trip up the mountain – shame, we'll have to catch an Atlantic sunrise somewhere else (as we head further west but stay on Eastern time it will, at least, be slightly later!) The plan for today was to drive the wiggly route US1 down the coast – the I95 which goes all the way to DC would be quicker but less scenic. As it turned out the US1 wasn’t that scenic either because it was still raining. There were times when I knew we were driving right along the water’s edge, but I couldn’t see anything except white. The towns we went through were very nice though – same New England architecture and style, but more real and rugged, not as prettied up for the tourists as Vermont. There were some towns that were a bit too shiny and new – Freeport was obviously a "shopping destination" with ye olde clapboard Ralph Lauren, Abercrombie and Fitch and Cole Haan outlet stores. Bath, Brunswick and Portland were larger and slightly grittier with busy docks and fishing ports as well as the picturesque “maritime heritage” that all these towns have – Camden had a harbourful of tall ships.

Our stop for the night, Portsmouth New Hampshire, is also still a working port. In search of a spot to watch for the dawn tomorrow we headed out towards the coast, to Rye, which seems to be quite a swanky neigbourhood – I suppose we are easy striking distance from Boston here – with vast Italianate villas on the cliffs above the ocean. The beach I’ve picked faces due east and was packed with brave surfers this evening. I should think we’ll be the only ones there at 5.07am tomorrow!
