There are many things different between Italian and American pizzas, but I would say the biggest difference is the toppings. Yes, mozzarella is popular is both countries, but pepperoni is kind of rare here. Quite often, it's not even on the restaurant menu. The most common toppings here are leaves of basil and tomatoes. NOT cut up- either of them, just FYI. So make sure to cut them up before you choke- speaking from experience, of course.
For my pizza, I added mozzarella, pepperoni, black olives (I had to make a special request) and bleu cheese. I actually really enjoyed the bleu cheese and it gave the pizza a little punch.
We also got to use a real brick oven. It was pretty cool, but they didn't let us use it ourselves- as if they didn't trust us! So what happens? The guy slides mine off into the oven. So, a lot of my mile-high piled toppings (say that 3x fast!) fell off and my pizza got burned a little in the process. It was still delicious, but I definitely think I'm going to leave the pizza making up to the pros!
