The next day , (19th) I was up ealry ad went down to the post office to send home my malawi chair that I had had on the trucvk the whole trip and completely forgotten about! Then we were all off to the Apartheid museum, which was really interesting and sad. For those who don't know about the aprrtheid (I had never heard of it before coming here), it was the name of the regime the white government imposed in 1948 in S.Africa, separating all races, much like in America, and giving black no rights at all, in effect. It was awful that such ignorance continued for as long as it did, finally being lifted in 1991 after huge amounts of resistance from the black population. Then Mandela was elected president in 1994. It was a really good museum, unbiased, and not hiding anything. It explained the run up to the regime, from the 1700s, and how the regime was managed, all teh way up to its abolition. There was laods of video footage from news programmes and a lot of it was pretty sad and disturbing.
After leaving the museum, 5 of the group were off to the airport to catch their flights, so there were more tears all round, and the remaining 5 of us (me, angela, paul caremn and betty) were off to our other hostel we had booked, called the airport backpackers. We caught the airport shuttle as the hostel offered free pick up from there, but when we rang them 5 mins before arriving at the airport, we were told they had given our (booked) beds away. Hum. So after a bit of nifty phone work we got ourselves booked into where I am now, the diamond diggers hostel, also near the asirport. It's a lovely place, even has a jacuzzi in the bar, agym and sauna (oooo- none of which i've used but still, jacuzzi in the bar!!) APPARANTLY THE OTHER PLACE IS A FUMP ANYWAY SO i GUESS THEY DID US A FAVOUR!
Now i'm just updating all these details beofer I catch the shuttle to the airport to fly over to sydney...how exciting! My next entry will be from the land down under! G'day for now,
