I was all of three minutes late and the eager beavers were about to leave without me. Fortunately, they get lost without the dog to follow, so when Pal was spotted in the back of the car, the whole group paused in delight, which gave me enough time to get out of the car and catch up. The top of the hills was wreathed in fog. Actually the top, middle and bottom of the hills was wreathed in fog, so it was definitely a follow-the-dog day.

We took the shorter, steeper route up the steps to St Ann's Well. Two newcomers left us at that point and headed off on their own. The remaining regulars puffed uphill through the close, humid atmosphere, sweating and going red in the damp air. We took a break at the bench to wipe the condensation from our foreheads.

Elaine opted for the 'let's see where this path goes in the fog' route. They had managed to get lost on the same path in misty conditions a few months ago, and seemed to want to repeat the experience. We zig-zagged up, despite limited visibility and met the missing newcomers, who were coming back down. We exchanged limited greetings and they disappeared into the white veil below, never to be seen again.

At the top, it was a little blowy, but nothing like the gale force we've managed in the past. After a quick chocolate-coated snack (read apple for us diabetics), we once again, tried a new visibility free route back down again, chatting about everything from world super-viruses to Granny's crockery.
