Hope everyone reading is well. Please add some comments to let us know how everything is going at home!
A feature of this trip has been unfortunate transportation issues. After leaving the reunion, we headed down to Amsterdam to do some shopping and wait for our overnight train to Basel. At the train station, we learned we couldn't take the overnight train because of the type of pass we have, so instead we decided to turn our trip around somewhat and head down to Limburg in the extreme south of the Netherlands for some biking and touring. We headed to Maastricht (where Ted was last week) only to find a conference in town that was taking up almost all the hotel rooms. This part of Europe has also been in the grip of a heatwave so you might notice in all the pictures we're sunburned (plus nothing much is airconditioned except for the grocery stores, so needless to say we've been hanging around the local Albert Hejn as much as possible). Despite this, we had a great time today biking into Belgium and along the river Maas, through some beautiful bikepaths and sleepy little towns. And if anyone ever tells you all of the Netherlands is flat, don't believe it! Our 3-speed city cruisers couldn't get us up a couple of the hills in the area. On the agenda for tomorrow is a day in transit as we try to make it to Basel via a different route.
