Up early and on the road to Dharamsala. We take along a weary American backpacker, Amanda, who's been travelling for 6 months, and has found survival tough in India as a single blond female traveller.

As the 6-hr journey progresses we suddenly start going up hill and the temperature drops, the air becomes fresher, and our energy levels rise.

Dharamsala is home of the Tibetan government in exile and the Dalai Lama has his residence just across from our guesthouse. We are staying in Chonor house each of the 12 rooms has its own tibetan hand-paintings - we are in the Opera House - which comes complete with its own resident super-sized spider which Rachel discovers in the shower.

The town is completely different from any other we've seen in India At the temple in Dharamsala

. We see many monks walking around in their long maroon robes, and most of the faces look Tibetan, not Indian. We also start to see a lot more Westerners here.

In the afternoon we meet the guide for our trek, Manu. He inspects our hiking gear, giving us the thumbs-up, and instructs us on what to expect on the trek ahead. Its all very exciting and we are looking forward to getting started on the 12-day trek on Tuesday.

We see Amanda later on and she informs us that at last she's found a part of India that she's comfortable in.

Hi John and Rachel,
Joel says could you send the spider to him so he can take it into school. Tim says hot is 20 degrees (gets sick if more.) Esther says no eating dogs!
Keep having fun,
