An unexpected bonus of the late decision to visit Argentina is a 7hr stopover in Rome. Especially lucky for me as I've never visited before and Rachel can be my guide. She was last here when she was 16. She still has mental scars from being robbed by a band of gypsy children in the train station.

15 minutes after a quick conversation at the tourist information kiosk in the airport and we are heading into Rome on the train. We are armed with a map which has our itinerary scribbled on it: Colosseum; Forum; Piazza Venezia; Pantheon; Piazza Navona (for gelati);Trevi fountain; Piazza di Spagna; back to airport.

Lots of tourists. Big old Roman buildings. Tasty ice cream and pizza. Very Impressive. I throw a coin into the Trevi fountain. Shame we don't have time to visit the Vatican. We could have compared notes on Byzantium and Roman Catholicism.

Rachel did not get robbed this time. Must come again.

Re: Rome Tips
Are you sure Rome will be warmer than England in December?

Rachel and I went to Greece one year in February and it was freezing. Even the car got stuck in the snow...

As for recommendations in Rome - we were only there for 4 hours or so. We only saw the really touristy things.

I´d really love to have seen the Vatican though...
