Roswell, famous for the alleged extraterrestrial spaceship crash and subsequent police cover up of 1947, typically conjures images of crackpot conspiracy theorists chasing UFOs through deserted backcountry and it certainly didn’t disappoint in this respect. Our first port of call was the outstanding Roswell UFO Museum and Research Centre. Here, there was a veritable plethora of affidavits, photographs and wild theories about the events of July 1947, all supporting the theory that material from a crashed extraterrestrial spacecraft was recovered (complete with bodies of crash victims) from a ranch 30 miles north of Roswell
Of course, there was too much information to take in and even the more incredible theories were presented as fact. Nevertheless, we had to admire the presentation, the amount of information on the subject and that fact that it was the kind of exhibit that could only have been put together by people who were incredibly enthusiastic about their subject. This made it a lot of fun to browse for an hour or so!
Other than the alien headed lamp-posts and occasional extraterrestrial themed souvenir shops, the town is a typical American small town. We concluded our visit with an evening drinking Alien Amber Ale in a super-hero themed bar across the road from our motel before retiring for the night, Stuart secretly harbouring hopes of being abducted by aliens in the night!
