per say, but its tolerated inside local "coffee shops". I don't know where you go for a cup of coffee, but its not to the "coffee shop". If you legalize Marijuana, you might as well legalize prostitution as well right? A walk through the Red Light District is enough to turn your stomach in the day or night. You've heard the song "How much is that doggy in the window?" Well here, they aren't doggies, or they may be, depending on how much you are willing to spend. We had to take a curious peek and then we headed to the Oude Kerk. The "old church" is situated right in the middle of the Red Light District
. Location, location, location!! Its not as fabulous inside as some of the cathedrals we have seen, but it was still beautiful. High wooden ceilings had paintings on them from the 1600's. The entire church was under construction so I'm sure some of the "good stuff" was in storage. They had an impressive old pipe organ and someone was playing it while we were inside. After our time there, it was more than likely we would want to see the Nieuwe Kerk or the new church. Don't get too excited, it was about the same, except newer. We checked out the Madame Tussaud's wax museum here too since we had nothing else on the agenda. It was interactive and they had a live pirate exhibit where pirates jump out and scare you. Shannon peed his pants. He didn't want me to tell you that. Oops!! Once again I blame the weed!! Another interesting sight in Amsterdam are all the museums. They have over 30 museums to enjoy. You could have a total bore-a-thon if you wanted. We only went to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh museum. In the Rijksmusuem you can see a number of Dutch painters' work including many works by Rembrandt. He lived and worked here and his wife is buried in that old church I was telling you about. You don't remember!?!?! Put down that BONG and pay attention to our BLOG!! The Van Gogh museum is full of paintings by some famous guy you may have heard of, unless you cut off your ear.....then you wouldn't know about him. In actuality we learned a lot about the painters troublesome life here. He wasn't "crazy" really, but suffered from some form of undiagnosed epilepsy at the turn of the last century
. This would have been awful because they did not know what it was and therefore could not treat it. He lived his life in fear, never knowing when he would black out, have a seizure or experience hallucinations. He definitely suffered for his art and it means that much more to the world. Speaking of crazy, our friend Jiska hails from the Netherlands and she was kind enough to meet us in Amsterdam for a very lovely evening full of pancakes and pear juice! We love Jiska because she's so young and already speaks Dutch!! Seriously folks, she's the coolest chick in the north western part of Europe where they speak Dutch and wear wooden shoes with tulips on them. Oh yeah and she lives in a windmill. She wanted us to tell you that!! Thanks for meeting us Jiska!! And thank you Amsterdam for not sinking before we got to enjoy your charms!!
As Shannon and I passed the hash pipe with some strange dudes we met at the live sex show, it dawned on me......I don't think we are in Koln anymore Toto!! Welcome to Amsterdam!! Situated below sea level, Amsterdam is a city underwater!! It's hardly Atlantis, but there are many bridges and canals. Not unlike Venice, it seems as though many of the buildings are sinking and leaning. Maybe no one notices because they are all high. Oh yeah, I guess I have to mention that its okay to smoke Marijuana here. Its not
