We set off with just a few things in our small backpacks and left the rest at the hostel. (I had no straighteners or make up for a few days). We got a bus to a little place called Yanque which was an eye opener. Our room was a mud hut with only a bed and it was freezing cold. The lady who ran it was very nice but didn't understand a word we were saying she just kept smiling. She made us a two course dinner first course was corn soup and the second was spaghetti with a few vegetables on top. I couldn't bring myself to eat it at all plus i had no appetite. Brendan ate the lot, he would never starve i was trying to get him to eat mine so it didn't look so bad but i think he had had enough at that stage.
After dinner we headed for bed as there was nothing else to do. We had to get up and get a bus to a place called Cabanaconde the start of the canyon at 4.30 that was another mad experience. I couldn't believe that people were getting up at this time to start a days work and i was crying about being tired. When we arrived i was in two minds whether i was up for the trek or not. I decided to go for it how hard could it be? We started off through a village at seven in the morning and it was quite cold we then came to the start of the canyon. The view was amazing and it was so high. After about half an hour of trekking downwards our legs started to feel like jelly and really weak at that point i knew it was a bad idea but there was no going back. I cried and cried till i got to the oasis at the bottom and Brendan didn't say a thing he was very patient. Little did i know that was the easy part. We then had to trek for a further lot of hours to get to our hostel which was in the middle of the canyon. On our journey there we meet a French Canadian who was trekking in the opposite direction from us. She told us a bit about the trek we had ahead of us and made it out to be a piece of cake, if i seen her now i would have serious words with her. Can i please remind everyone who is reading this that the canyon is 100km long, 6613m high and ranges from 1000m to more than 3000m in depth. It is more than twice as deep as the Grand Canyon in the USA.
Finally we got to our destination and we were both so happy. The hostel was really nice and the owners also. Our room was a hut with a straw roof and i thought this was class it would be like sleeping outside. They made us dinner for seven and again it was two courses one of soup and the other rice and some vegetables which i didn't eat again. It was another early start so we went to our beds for nine. At around twelve i heard this voice beside me shouting "keva keva i think something has crawled into my ear". I freaked out and started to hit Brendan on the ear and make him move his head to the side but nothing was working he could still feel it. I decided to pour water into his ear to maybe drown it and it kind of worked but it was now floating around in there dead and wouldn't come out. Brendan didn't sleep the rest of the night with worry and i was the same myself but didn't want to say.
The next morning we got up at five and it was very dark we couldn't see a thing but we went on trekking. Of course i cried until the sun came out i kept thinking someone was going to kidnap us and kill us. After an hour and a half we realized we had taken a wrong path and a really dangerous one at that and of course i cried for another half hour. We decided to go back and find some help which we did. Some guy who treks the canyon everyday of his life was heading to work and it was no bother to him. He ran the whole way to the top think it took him two hours and took us five. We were on the right road and nothing was going to stop us until we started to get really tired and thirsty and the water was very low. Brendan had to take my backpack plus his own cause i had decided that i was going to stay there and die and the birds could eat me. I was convinced we weren't making it to the top. The water got really low then ran out, it was the worst day of my life we were going to die of thirst i was freaking out and i knew Brendan was too but he kept telling me we are almost there. We heard a few mules coming down the canyon and then saw a man running behind them i stopped him and asked him for some water, i couldn't believe my eyes he had bottles of the stuff and there we were dying in this canyon. We got a two litre of him and we never drank as much and as fast in our lives. It was all looking good and it was from then on we only had two more hours and that was us. We met an American guy trekking down who took a liking to us because Brendan had on his Tyrone shirt and his brother lived somewhere in Tyrone. Really nice fella. What happens next??? Yes we did it we reached the top and we couldn't believe it we both jumped for joy. It was a really class feeling to know that we had made it to the top but i feeling i don't really care to have again. Daddy its nothing like walking the black mountain and doing that every week would never have prepared me for that. Ill do the Black mountain any day.
We finally got a bus back to Arequipa and stayed there for another night. We headed for the first pizza place and stuffed our faces.
