Where I stayed
We went to a silk factory just outside Fergana but as it was Sunday it was closed and the guy from the shop came in and gave a brief talk. It's basically a cottage industry and families are given 20 grams of eggs to start off which they keep in a box 1 sq metre but by the end of the month they have grown so each tiny worm is the size of your finger and they take up to 3 rooms in the house finally eating about 300 kilos of mulberry leaves every day. It seems that the locals really like sharing their homes with animals od one kind or another! Needless to say I bought myself another 2scarves from the shop.
The local guide we have at the moment is quite an ignorant pig compared to another guide we met, who was just brilliant. We met up with another Drago truck doing the same route as us but in reverse in Fergana and it was brilliant meeting up with another set of guys and hearing their stories. I also met up with Jerri who is now doing that route but had previously been on the India trip with me and it was great to see a familiar face. We swapped news and Jerri I passed on your news about Vegi Mike to some friends and coincidence or what but a girl who I did a Drago trip in Africa with a few years ago is currently on another trip in Africa with Veggie Mike and he's already said how at the end of the trip he is going to her to be at the birth of their child!! What a coincidence eh?
This is our second day in Samarkand and the weather is baking. Yesterday we went on a tour around all the mosques and mausaleums and they are exquisitely beautiful but i was flagging by lunchtime and needed to go back to the hotel for a siesta. Today I have nothing planned but Laundry, internet, journal and shopping - but not personal shopping - shopping for the truck and to restock the bar.
I heard this morning that one of the people who joined the trip last week has asked to sign herself off - no particular reason but toilet stops on the first transit may have put her off and this is her first overland trip. Tomorrow night we have yet another yurt stay so I'm preparing myself to bed down with another sheep and use the long drop toilets again. I obviously need to stock up on the vodka.
Not much more news to tell and I'm feeling weak from upset tum and the heat so I'm going back now to write my journal.
Spreak to you all soon.
Lots of love
