Yesterday Dan, Mary and I traveled from Ramallah, Palestine to Amman, Jordan - a little over a 100 miles.
First, we were picked up by a taxi in Ramallah that was arranged through Maysa for us - a good price, a very careful driver and a young man who was going to make sure we were not taken advantage of once we made it to the Allenby Bridge area. There we had to transfer to an Israeli taxi who took us to the Israeli departure area and our Palestinian driver waited until the price came down before he would transfer us. It was very appreciated to be taken care of so well.
The Israeli taxi dropped us off at the Israeli departure area and an Egyptian man came and collected our baggage, promising to watch over it carefully while we were inside. Once through, he came forward and loaded our baggage onto the bus that took us to the Jordanian arrival area. We crossed the green, narrow Jordan River winding its way through the dusty landscape.
Once through the Jordan arrival gate, we caught another taxi into Amman, 57 km away. He couldn't find the Best Western Dove Hotel but stopped and asked directions from a man who spoke great English and knew "The Dove" well.
At dinner we went to Kan Zaran, a restored caravan stop and fortress south of Amman. Handicraft and antique shops also are there. We were too early for the evening dinner buffet and Arabic music so had lunch kebobs. Unfortunately, Dan and I bought caught a "bug" of some kind related to water (you know, Montezuma's revenge) - hopefully, Mary is okay as she rode a bus to Petra and back today.
As we were driving south to Kan Zaran, there was a long line of cars backed up and I reached into my purse and said, "I hope I brought the passports with me." Mary thought my comment rather odd - we were at a stop light which I didn't see. I thought it was another checkpoint!
Then this morning got the report of the assassination in Ramallah, near the Friends meetinghouse and Angelo's, the local pizzeria. Joyce is okay and we are in Jordan.
