Dust Storms and Flowers
Spring in Ramallah is the time for flowers and dust storms.  I've experienced both now!

As a preschooler living on the plains of Colorado, I remember dust storms well.  They would blow up and you couldn't see very far.  We lived in the country and I remember so well sitting on the couch looking out the window as my Mom would run out to turn off the windmill.  I could see her head out the door, then she would disappear into the cloud of brown, and finally re-appear.  I was always scared when she went out and disappeared; and always so relieved when I saw her re-appear.  I would jump off the couch (where I was told to stay) and meet her at the door. The dust storms in Colorado are dirty brown and the dust gets everywhere.

Recently, there have been several dust storms here, although they are really yellow sand storms.  The yellow, very fine sand is everywhere!  Even when the windows and doors are closed, a layer of yellow settles on everything.  And outside, look at the yellow on these chairs that were cleaned off just the day before!

But spring here is also a time of flowers in the Kaybab Gardens.  For the first time since I lived in California, I saw bottlebrush trees blooming.

There was also this yellow tree which is gorgeous (see above) and these black flowers that look like huge jack-in-the-pulpits, but who knows?

There are also fields of wild red poppies much like the wild golden poppies in California.  The fields of red poppies are called "blood of the martyrs" which reminds one of the occupation and the many lives lost since 1948.
