We arrived at our Thousand Trails Preserve on Boulder Highway in Las Vegas last Wednesday after a short hour and a half drive. We settled in, noticing that a majority of the RV's here in the park were Nextel Cup race fans - it was almost like being parked at the track, there were so many race flags flying!
On Thursday, we went to Boulder Station Casino for their buffet lunch before heading out to The Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the races we were most excited to see - the Sprint Cars and the Dirt Late Models - two nights of great racing were scheduled, and we planned to be there for every last heat race, last chance race, and A-Main. The CRA Sprints Cars are our favorite class of race cars - the ones we would go watch every chance we had at Perris Auto Speedway back in California. Back in December, we wrote about going to the year-end party with Alexander Trucking's Driver, #4, Tony Jones - so it was especially fun to see him win the A-Main on Thursday night in Vegas! In the pits after the race - Tony's son was the center of attraction, wearing Tony's helmet as he ran in and out of the hauler!
Friday evening we had more of the same, Sprint Cars and Dirt Late Models - another late night, more good racing. Unfortunately, Tony had a flat during qualifying, so it was not as good of a night for him, but we were happy to see Josh Wise, a Riverside, California racer we've watched since his rookie year, win the race. We'll all be hearing his name a lot more in the coming years, as he's going to be driving a Craftsman Truck for Waltrip Racing, and then moving into Busch and Cup Cars.
Saturday, we got an early start and headed out to the Superspeedway for the Busch Race. It was VERY hot and sunny. We had decided not to buy tickets for the Cup race on Sunday, but we did see the Cup Cars in their final practice session before the Busch race began. The race got long, with a record number of caution flags, but it certainly was an exciting finish, with the formerly leading Kyle Busch crossing the finish line backwards and in second place, having been bumped out of the way by Jeff of those racing things!
Saturday night was a specially fun night, as our friends Rick and Diane (the ones we went 4-wheeling with at Pismo last month) were in town for the races with friends, and we all went out to dinner at a FABULOUS seafood buffet at the Rio. I don't think we've EVER eaten so many crab legs, small lobsters, or shrimp - it was yummy! And the company was great - with a few laughs over some after dinner drinks afterwards.
Sunday, we nursed our sunburns and stayed in the cool of the motorhome to watch the Cup Race, which had a wonderful finish, with "Rose's Guy", Jimmie Johnson #48 taking his first win of the year.
