Haven't written much in a while, but need to make an entry in memory of my Mom, who passed away suddenly (even at 91) on Sunday, February 28, 2010.

I can't believe I'm writing this...some of you know that early Saturday morning, Mom was transported to the hospital because she had fallen and had severe pain in her tailbone. X-Rays, CatScans, etc. showed nothing conclusive, but it was determined that she probably had a hairline crack in her tailbone, and they would probably release her Monday to a Physical Therapy/Recovery bed in a care facility. All vital signs were good, and she was mostly sleeping, but when awake, was NOT happy to be
in a hospital, sure there was nothing wrong with her. (Which of course, was encouraged by the fact that the hospital staff repeatedly commented that she certainly didn't look 91!).

I'll let Jill take it from here, as I think she's said it so well: Well, after two straight days in the hospital of Mom telling me (and apparently God) every waking minute, "GET ME OUT OF HERE", her prayers
have been answered, and God took her to be with him early this evening (Sunday, February 28, 2010).
She passed away quickly and gently with the nurses in the room, about an hour after I had left her. I know she is out of pain, and that we are blessed that she did not have to live in an incapacitated way,
but Lord, how I will miss that feisty Italian lady who I was so blessed to have as a Mom.

I can only echo Jill's words - we are two very blessed women to have had the parents we had, who gave us a wonderful life, and who stayed with us long enough to be sure we would continue to build on the blessings and teachings they provided us, and to see their grandchildren grow into great young adults. Mom was always so full of life, and so loved life and the world around her, that Jill and I never knew that many girls growing up didn't have that same energy, enthusiasm, and curiosity injected into their psyches.

I talked to Mom on the phone just a couple hours before she passed, and even a few hours before she went into the hospital, she told me on the phone that she was fine, and everything was "copacetic", as she loved to say. I am so happy that I was with Mom just one month ago, and we had lots of time to play Scrabble (and she beat me, of course!), and she was doing her crossword puzzles, and every bit as feisty and full of life as she's ever been - even rearranged letters on the Scrabble
Board to make a "dirty" word, with a devilish grin on her face the whole time!

We are going to take some time to regroup - and will probably have a Memorial Service and interment of Mom's ashes in May, when the weather is more to Mom's liking - she never did love this Winter stuff! We know that Dad's been waiting for Mom's arrival for quite some time now, and we're sure that they're holding hands up above, wishing we'd all get on with life, and with remembering the love and joy they brought to our lives.

We thank you all for your love, your prayers, and your thoughts, and most of all, we thank you for being a part of Mom's, Dad's, and our lives.

Rest in Peace, Ann Mesiti Mills - we love you, and will always miss you.

PostScript: There will be a service Celebrating Ann Mills' Life on Saturday  May 15th
(the week after Mother's Day), at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1500 Scio Church Road,
Ann Arbor, Michigan 48103.; (The warmth of Spring just seemed like the most "Ann-appropriate" timing for this celebration.); Exact time and details will be provided at a later date.

For anyone who wishes to make a donation in Mom's memory, we suggest one of these - or, if you prefer, a donation to your favorite charity in her name would be wonderful, as well.
Westminster Presbyterian Church,  2301 Ridgeway Road, Jackson MI 49203 (Mom and Dad's / Jill and Rick's Jackson home church until they moved to Ann Arbor)
Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1500 Scio Church Road, Ann Arbor MI 48103 (Mom and Dad's / Jill and Rick's current home church in Ann Arbor - where memorial will be held and where their ashes are / will be buried). Hillside Terrace Contribution Fund, 1939 Jackson Ave, Ann Arbor MI 48103 (where Mom and Dad lived since 2002; proceeds used to purchase memorable items for Hillside in honor of residents passing & for the Hillside Alzheimer's Memory Walk team donations each year).
