However, we had plenty to look forward to, as Keri had made plans to take us to a classy steak and seafood restaurant called Grill 23. We went over to her place in the afternoon and then drove into downtown Boston for dinner. All three of us had a moment of hesitation when we saw that the block in front of the restaurant was blocked off by a police car - and we then noticed a big banner proclaiming the "Boston Pride Block Party". We were afraid the loud music would come right through the walls of the restaurant, but once the door closed behind us, we were in a quiet, luxurious world of dark wood, brass, white linens, and fine service
So, that's how our lovely celebration began. . . along with a fabulous appetizer of LOBSTER Fish and Chips!! (Isn't that a hoot?) Before ordering, I asked numerous questions, having trouble deciding between the many scrumptious-sounding entree's, and I finally settled on the lamb chops - assuming that, since they're usually kind of small, they would be able to easily prepare them to my Medium+ preference. No such luck! The chops were loin chops - huge! - and they came to the table way too pink (red, really!) for me. So - back to the kitchen went my plate, while I ate from the beautiful platter of asparagus that Keri and I had decided to split. When my plate arrived back again, they were still too rare for my taste, so back they went again, with many apologies, and a follow-up visit from the manager. They were well worth the wait, though, as the flavor was superb, and they were still very tender when I was finally able to start on them.
After this great dinner (which was accompanied by a great bottle of merlot - I was still savoring my champagne, too, having enjoyed it before dinner, and planning to sip on it after dinner, too!), our server told me to be sure to order a dessert on the house, as an apology for the problem with the lamb chops. So, easily encouraged, I ordered a vanilla bean creme brulee', and Keri ordered the mascarpone cheesecake. Imagine our surprise when the waiter showed up with these in addition to a house specialty dessert - profiteroles - and announced that they were ALL on the house!
So, it was a night full of surprises and treats - and one we won't forget soon! Guess there are some advantages to getting old, after all! : )
