Good info comes from time spent in the laundry rooms at our parks!  I met a lady today who told me that the FREE show at the Herrmann Royal Lippizan Stallion Ranch, about a half hour from here, was fabulous - so we decided to go this afternoon!  What beautiful, incredible animals!  What a performance!  What pictures!
In some of the photos, you might notice an "H" and crown brand on the horses' flanks - this is only allowed on those horses that are descended directly from the original Royal Hapsburg Family of Austria.  Be sure to go to the link above and read about the Lipizzans - I had never known how very rare they are, and that they've been especiallly developed to be used in battle - the "Airs above the Ground" kicks and jumps were all necessary in battle.  And, the reason General Patton is always pictured on a white horse is that he was presented with a Lipizzan Stallion by the Royal Family of Austria as a thank you...from then on, he rode no other horse!
If you ever have a chance to visit the Herrmann Ranch here in Florida, don't miss the opportunity!

Betty L. Willard on

I've known the Herrmann family since 1968, during my 9 months working in Sarasota. I was incredibly sad to read that Col. Herrmann, Jr. has died in 2004. I knew Gabriella when she was small; also her grandfather, Col. Herrmann, Sr., her uncle, Harry Herrmann, & some others whose names I can't remember. Otto (her father) was kind to me because he knew I loved horses & could never afford one. Therefore, he lent me -- for a whole summer! -- an Appaloosa stallion named Great Heart [his father wouldn't let him lend me a Lipizzan, & I don't blame him!] The Herrmanns have ALWAYS been gracious about letting us get to know their horses &, when they're not TOO busy, themselves! And yes, it's true: Some of their horses today ARE direct descendants of those that Patton & Col. Podhajsky (sp?) saved during WW2. God bless the Herrmann Family. You taught me things you'll never know about, although I would be so glad to share them! Love, Betty.
