Very early this morning, as I sat at the kitchen table emailing and planning, a bright pink color  seeped in between my closed blinds, and I pulled them open to see a sunrise unlike any I've ever seen before! (Yes, I know that many of you are saying "that's because you get up too late in the morning" - and that IS usually the case, at least since retirement hit - but there were many times in the past that I saw sunrises - but this one was a beautiful cross between a sunrise, a rainbow, and a sunset.  I grabbed my camera and started shooting...

An hour or so later, my phone rang, and it was my Cousin Amy, speaking quietly, not at all her usual, animated style.  She had just received a call from her sister Adele in Wilmington, NC, that their Mother, my Aunt Adele, had just passed on, peacefully, shortly after speaking to my Cousin Adele on the phone.  Aunt Adele is my mother's older sister - she turned 93 on November 26th - my Mom turned 89 on November 27th.  Over the years, we've had a number of parties to celebrate these vibrant ladies - the most recent birthday gathering was at Thanksgiving of '04, when Adele tured 90 - it was a great affair, with cousins from all over showing up to show their aunts how much they enjoyed and appreciated them.   In our first year on the road, we brought my Mom out to Wilmington to visit her "Big" Sister and "Little" Brother Tony (he's 3 years behind Mom, I think!).  All of the get-togethers have always been joyous occasions, as the three of them entertained us with their great senses of humor, funny memories, and overall upbeat attitudes.

So, I know now - that beautifully strange streak of sunrise glory was my Aunt Adele - in her favorite tones of pink and blue - a symbolic sunrise here on the West Coast, as the glowing light that was my Aunt Adele left the other coast to follow her own rainbow.  We'll miss you, Aunt Adele...

And so, another change of plans...Greg will continue to help out at his old place of work, while I fly out to North Carolina to attend a service celebrating Aunt Adele's life, and to provide what little help and support I might to Cousins Adele and Janet.   My poor Cousin Amy is on stage here in Orange County in a lead role in a play that opens Friday night - with NO understudies - so her trip to Wilmington will have to be a VERY quick one in order to get back on stage the following evening.
