We toured Memphis today with Blues City Tours - probably the first time we've taken an organized tour of any kind that we didn't feel was worth the money.
We were pretty disappointed in the tour - seemed like we were along for a very fast bumpy ride while the bus picked up and dropped off people on other longer or shorter tours! Not a whole lot in the way of information was shared - the bus driver was very nice, but just not informative, and drove waay too fast for the condition of the roads around Memphis! The only thing it did for us was save us from looking for parking spots at the key tourist spots around town.
Neither of us ever really LOVED Elvis, so spending $30+ dollars apiece to tour Graceland wasn't on our agenda - the drive-by was all we needed
If we'd had more time, I would have liked to have spent it in the National Civil Rights Museum, which has been built at the site of the Lorraine Motel, where Dr. Martin Luther King was murdered. We did hear that the museum is very well done, and you can easily spend an entire afternoon there.
Like most tourist areas (Branson, Nashville, etc), Memphis' Beale Street has continued to get more expensive than it's worth - $7.50 for a small draft beer, and there wasn't even any music going on at that time! We could have gone back later in the evening for the music, but it's really just not that exciting...
We did decide that we'll come back into Memphis tomorrow night to see the Memphis Redbirds (AAA Team for the World Champion St. Louis Cardinals) play against the New Orleans Zephyrs (AAA Team for the Miami Marlins) - so there will be more pictures to go with that!
