More rain today! Apparently, it has been sunny for weeks until I showed up. I've been lucky so far this trip - very few rainy days overall, and more importantly, very few boring stretches like this. But of course, the boredom continued today. It does make you appreciate the good times more, however.
Had breakfast then chatted with the group from last night. They are going to Alghero, too. I took a risk - going for the 12:00 bus that may or may not exist. I grabbed an olive/cheese panini (by accident; didn't notice the olives) before the bus. Also a banana. Haven't had much fruit recently so now was a good time, I figured.
Walked through a market - mostly day-to-day goods like clothing. Ran into the group at the bus station - being smart (unlike me), they had the hostel call the bus office and confirmed that there was a 12:00 bus. On the bus - Matt is a really great guy, but sometimes he talks too much! I pretended to be asleep on the bus so that I wouldn't have to respond.
He looks like the actor that plays Patrick on the BBC's "Coupling" sitcom. And Pierre-Andre looks like a cross between Tom Brady and Chris O'Donnell. Interesting. Sadly, after all this time without a haircut, I can only say that I look like a Chia head.
Alghero - I lost my pen and my umbrella! This has to stop! I am losing my mind! It's pretty pathetic how much it has degraded ... I used to take pride in my impeccable memory ... but now, I only take pride when I can successfully eat without stabbing myself in the eye with my fork.
Anyway, I had no clue where the umbrella went (I either left it on the bus or dropped it on the street) and it really is a necessity with Sardinia's unpredictable weather. Bused to nearby Fertilia to drop off my bag at the hostel. Absolutely nothing in Fertilia ... not much more in Alghero. I did have a Bounty and a Crillantino Al Rhum gelato. Nothing special, but they were flavours I had never tried before.
Back to the hostel - I was so bored that I paid 5 euros to use the Internet for an hour. I had no choice, otherwise I would have lost what little remains of my mind. At least I was able to do some more trip planning.
The restaurant that I had dinner at had roasted Sardinian cheese! I was too afraid to order it, or even ask about it, so I can't confirm if it was the maggoty cheese. Had gnocchetti Gallurese - ham, cheese, tomato, basil, and mushrooms. The gnocchetti was good but the sauce was only average. Still, it didn't stop me from cleaning up the sauce with the entire basket of bread.
Grilled Sardinian sausage - butterflied and served with diced tomatoes and grilled zucchini. It smelled great but was lacking in flavour. Another forgettable meal ... sigh ... and tonight was supposed to be a splurge meal, too!
Heard Lacuna Coil's remake of Depeche Mode's classic "Enjoy the Silence". It was a live version ... good, but too similar in many ways to the original. The girl's voice is not powerful enough ... the backup singers managed to give the vocals a little shot of power, depth, and texture. I suppose that it is a problem with female lead singers for hard rock bands. They are a little Evanesence-esque ....
