I woke up early on Sunday morning, eager to get out of 'bug river' and go diving. The boat to the island was supposed to leave at 9 am, but there were many delays and we didn't leave until 2 pm that afternoon. I was thinking that I was going to be the only guest on the island since I hadn't seen any other visitors arriving at the guest house, but another Belizean couple showed up Sunday morning to join me. I was practically alone for a week nevertheless, since I didn't see them apart from the boat ride in and out. They stayed mostly in their bungalow during that week, but we waved at each other occasionally. Talk about a Robinson Crusoe experience...
The boat ride out to the island started in a cool way, we sped down the jungle in Sittee river and saw a rather large crocodile while we were refueling. But when we get out in the open water it was a rather choppy ride in a very small boat
The family who own the island consist of Marsha Jo (grandma), Becky, Jackie, Maddie and their son who I can't remember the name of. They've lived in Belize for several years but are originally from the States. The dive instructor Breeze and "go to guy" Rudi are also on the island to help things running smoothly. There are also 3 German shepherds and the cutest puppy Simba to keep you company if you get lonely!
I got my very own overwater bungalow which was very basic, yet comfortable and it didn't do much that there was no real shower, fresh water or toilet on the island. The place is great and makes up for the lack of luxury. But I wish I had brought a flashlight, since you couldn't see much after sunset at 6.30 pm... But the moon proved to be pretty useful for 'late night' navigation, read 8pm!
It was kind of late when we arrived so after a quick dinner I went to bed hoping to dream about the diving yet to come...

01. Over water bungalow
. It took us over 3 hours to get there, so when we finally made it to Glover's reef atoll, I felt like I arrived at the end of the world. The Cabral Son
Warren is the young mans name. Well you certainly missed about the most interesting individual on the island. Warren is probably around 14 now and hands down the most incredible fishermen I've ever encountered. I am a boat captain and have worked in the charter fishing industry for many years, so this is one bold statement. And there is fresh water and showers now available on the island, as there was 6 years ago.
Re: The Cabral Son
Hi!!
Thank you so much for refreshing my memory. I'm sorry Warren's name eluded me. He kept mostly to himself that week, but I believe you when you say he's a fantastic fisherman. I could often see him fishing in the lagoon. (I think Breeze said he was around 16 last fall.)
I have no idea why I said that there is no fresh water on the island, I knew that... I meant a proper shower/toilet, but included freshwater in there somehow. I'm debating with myself to edit my error or if I should just let it stand...
Again thank you for correcting me :-)
Happy travels!
