I had the longest day in London!!! I left Oslo on the first flight to London - switched airports from Heathrow to Gatwick. (Took 3 hours.) I needed to kill around 8 hours at the airport, so after checking in to Malé, I found a newly opened day hotel. You may rent rooms for 3 hours or more and you can sleep, shower or watch tv in them. The hotel was called Yotel and I found it pretty good. Spacewise it reminded me of what I've seen images of from Japan. It's tiny and the bed is 'a hole in the wall', but you have everything you need, it's cheap and you are able to rest/kill time, waiting for your flight.
I felt much better when I got on the plane to Malé. The journey takes around 10 hours from England to the Maldives and I slept almost the whole time.
