Where I stayed
Since we woke up fairly early for a weekend, breakfast wasn't too crowded. There was a group of people down there, most of them also garbed in Nittany Lion wear. There was one older couple who actually did something I had wanted to do a few years ago for the Outback bowl. They took a Penn State T-shirt and a Syracuse T-shirt, split them down the middle, and sewed a half from each together. So the one shirt said "Penn Cuse" and the other "Syra State". I thought it was really cool. So did the other SU people down in the breakfast area. The PSU people gave them grief. I found that to be true too at the Outback bowl where PSU played Tennessee and I wore stuff from each school
The game started at 3:30, but there was a Penn State Tailgate going on outside the Dome starting at 1:30. So we headed over to SU right after lunch. Parking is at a place called Sky Top. They run buses from there down to Campus. UVA does something similar and it really is a great system. When the game was over, they had a ton of buses running so the wait wasn't too long at all to catch a bus back. The only complaint, they did not have enough port-a-potties for the amount of people up there tailgating.
When we got off the bus, Otto the Orange (SU Mascot) was hanging out. I so wanted to get my photo taken with him. Most of the people I were with, were at PSU after we entered the Big Ten. But when I was there, SU was one of our biggest rivalries and it was always a fun time. Otto and the Lion always had some crazy antics going on and we even passed Otto up the stands. He's really a fun mascot, even if he's not mine. Needless to say, I didn't get my photo taken with him and now I'm sorry. :-(
The Tail-Great was a lot of fun
We finally headed into the Dome about an hour before game time. When we found our seats, we were disappointed to find we were under an overhang and it blocked a little bit of our view of the scoreboard. We also quickly discovered that a place named after an A/C company did not have A/C. By game time, it was super hot in our seats. If we just had some air flow it would have helped.
The game itself turned out to be a blow-out in PSU's favor, so I won't hash that all out. Al was enthralled that beer was actually served at a college game. I enjoyed watching all the fun that Otto was having (despite the blow-out) and also when he and the Lion did their little gig together
The other thing I noticed were the "bag heads". Several students in the student section put bags over their heads to show their embarrassment in the team. I think one of them had a request for the coach to be fired. I'm still not sure how I feel about this. It does make a statement without being all vocal, but I have to wonder what it does for team morale.
So... was the Rivalry Renewed? In some ways yes, but SU will need to return to its former Glory for it to again be a true rivalry. I bought the t-shirt anyway.
