Bhutan Arrival

Bhutan has about 700.000 citizens, 17.000 tourists per year (2006), and two airplanes. Along with a bunch of monks, one of the two "Druk Air" Airbuses took me to the Himalayan kingdom.
Nice views of Mount Everest and the rest of the Himalayas on the way. Approaching Paro, Bhutan's only airport, the pilot warned that it is "normal procedure" that the wings of the plane almost seem to scrape the mountains skirting the valley.
Upon arrival in Paro, I was met by Jigme, my guide for the next few days. And the programme began immediately with a very typical sight in Bhutan: the Paro Dzong (ancient fortress turned administration plus monastery). Bhutan's national museum in the Dzong's former watchtower has an interesting collection of historic artifacts and religious items, as well as an impressive stamps collection (nice series on the Olympics 1972 in Munich!).
Be prepared for loads of Dzong pictures in upcoming posts!
