I really had no idea that all these huge cities on the east coast are only a few hours apart ! I tried to reduce my stress by taking secondary highways today instead of the big pikes to try and get to our KOA and avoid going through Baltimore. After Boston and New York I figured that I needed a break and so did a big loop around it into Reading , Pa and then south. Our Koa has a shuttle into DC and for 2 days we have enjoyed stress free driving and a city that exceeded my expectations ! My only big fear was that with so many people from around the country and world that we avoid swine flu !! I did not know that all of the museums and the memorials make up the "Smithsonian" and that everything is free ! The art galleries were amazing to see famous original paintings and sculptures that I have only ever seen pictures of ! The museum of Natural History was incredible as well as countless others
. We walked the half hour out to the White House and stood on the steps of the Lincoln memorial reading the Gettysburg address. The Washington Memorial spires into the sky and the WW 2 memorial was breathtaking ! We saw in 2 days not even 1/4 of it ! Again, the areas to get into the city were tough to see, not like New York but we didn't see it all either as we were not doing the driving. I kept thinking of all the presidents who had stood in those places ! I will see Capital Hill differently forever ! The “mall” that you see on TV is way bigger than I ever thought ! I wish we had had time to see the Congress library and the Shakespeare library but another trip ! I am glad that my kids are seeing what freedom means to us and how hard it is to not be enslaved by poverty. I think it is important for them to treasure the beauty in the landscapes they have seen and I know every once in a while they see an ad for a 6 flags or some other amusement park and their eyes light up and yet I have steared clear of these things. I have seen how these have become a status symbol amongst their peers and I want this trip and their lives to be about exploring cultures and humanity, not for them to feel that they must be entertained by frivolity. Do not get me wrong, we have done and will do fairs , I just have a different goal for this particular trip. Let me just say that the weather here is so hot and humid ! Every night there is thunder and lightning and I love the vegetation here. Poor Morgan who is deathly afraid of thunder and lightning is being forced to confront her fear ! One night in the pouring rain (with lightning!) she had to walk back to our camp spot from the laundry room and is still having dreams about it ! The trees look like canopy trees in the rain forest and every night these grasshopper type bugs begin this huge chorus together that is almost deafening ! The birds join in and it all sounds very exotic ! Apparently they did spray in the campground and therefore that's why there are no mosquitoes !Coralyn and I saw a glow bug last night and it was amazing! We have had a great pool and laundry but no Internet in our RV. I just figured out that we could do the blog on a word doc. And then cut and paste later so that’s what I am doing ! Tomorrow we leave for – I think back to Pennsylvania. – we will figure that out tomorrow. We have all loved our experience with DC and hope to return one day. We will find the Washington Temple tomorrow – we ran into huge groups of missionaries today and they helped direct us ! We are all so tired and sore for having walked 8 hour days ! It will help make up for our sitting/driving days to come !
