As the plane began to fill up we looked in dread at each body walking down the aisle toward row 46, our row. The largest people seemed to pause and look the longest at the row number over our heads. I began thinking that we'd do well to bargain for that small woman to take the middle seat rather than risking one of the ultra-largies lumbering down the aisle, typically with three correspondingly huge carry-ons dragging behind him. Yikes--the middle seat of the row behind us just got taken by a tall man. And yikes, here comes a woman putting her bag in the rack over the middle section of row 46. She pivots around and looks at 46 J (we flank it in seats 46 H and 46 K)
The tension ratchets up further as more people trickle down the aisle. But at last comes the magic announcement we've been waiting for: "Ladies and gentlemen, the doors of the aircraft have now been closed. Please take your seats for an on-time departure."
Silent double hallelujahs! The middle seat will be empty. A glorious flight is assured!
And a fine flight it was.
