Where I stayed
This is a must for all visitors to the area. We hitched up with five llamas, two great guys – Jorge and Santos and Santos' daughter Clara and dog Sam and went for a walk along Garganta del Diablo (Devil’s throat). The only thing our good friends had not anticipated was our darling daughter Edie’s incapacity to walk; Heaven knows why this girl was blessed with legs, as she hates to use them. We, the rest of the family, the guides and the llamas could have walked for miles but Edie was adamant that the Gorge was not going to be conquered and became as stubborn as a mule.
After only 100 feet our darling daughter was asking how far to go.
However the route chosen by Santos was leisurely and scenic so everyone was happy
For those who want something more challenging (and do not have Edie with them) Santos offers a five-day trek into the mountains where you stay and eat with the villagers. Another time.
Our picnic was delightful – strawberries, cheese and ham sandwiches, slices of llama salami, goats cheese and good local wine. We must have sat for over two hours while the children played in the local fields and the llamas re-chewed the branches they had pulled off during the walk.
We eventually got our act together and packed up the picnic and returned to Tilcara. An enjoyable day.
