Off we drove from Vancouver with a big smile on our faces from such a lovely stay with the Woods and onto the site for the downhill skiing for the Olympics. It's only a 2 hour drive up into the mountains and we were all looking forward to seeing the famous resort where skiing is renowned to be the best in the world. We were impressed with the place and would love to come back in the winter for the snow – it certainly has a buzz about it.

We watched the World Downhill Trail Bike Championships where the competitors somersaulted, flipped, spun and flung themselves down the mountain. We followed and rented some bikes and cycled what seemed like miles (but at a slower pace than Marthas Vineyard) - everyone and their dog was out. This is not a place to be a couch potato.

We had a ride on a Beaver seaplane up over the resort with magnificent views of the mountains and glaciers, landing on a beautiful turquoise glacial lake for a picnic elevenses before flying back. We visited the Squamish and Lilwat Cultural Centre where Virginia cried watching a film about the local aboriginal tribes (they are called Aboriginals not Indians apparently but I couldn’t see the world changing to "Cowboys and Aboriginals" so they will always be Indians to me!). These were two treats from our agents to say sorry for some cock-ups along the way, and we were grateful to them.

Whistler is a great place to come with teenagers. It is so geared to high adrenaline sports and keeping them out in the fresh air. There is so much to do for everyone and although everyone thinks of whistlers as a ski resort we would certainly be happy to return when we need one of those holidays to keep teenagers amused.
