We made an additional stop on the way towards christchurch. Stopping in about 40kms from Oamaru, in another popular tourist spot. the main attraction being the Moeraki boulders which are scattered along the beach. These boulders where quite a sight, massive and almost perfectly spherical dotted all over the place. on inspection of an information board, the gist is, the boulders are over 65 millions years old, formed from crystallisations of calciums and carbonates in underwater water sediment, before making their way upto the surface.(where they look like the ground is giving birth to them. check out relative picture) Due to the cocktail of minerals used to form these boulders they have an almost un-erodable compound, meaning they an put up a damn good fight against the seas corrosive nature and have been hanging around (gloating) on the beach pretty much unaltered for millions of years.
Science lesson over children. Now go play!
