Ok, well im here, Our first port of call Sao Paulo, and the place is unbelievable. the city is home to something stupid like 17 million people, and is huge on a scale that i cant begin to describe. A fact that was instantly made apparent, in the somewhat crazy taxi transfer from the airport, there is just building sprawled out as far as the eye can see, its like a concrete jungle.
We arrived at our 1st hostel at 7am, on arrival it was clear that it want really a ¨travelers¨ hostel, but was definitely good enough for us, and was pretty centrally located within the city, so we grabbed some breaky, dumped stuff, and took as stroll into the city center.
the city is a pretty cazy place, with some beautiful sights and sounds, and some not so pretty Smells. there are so many homeless scattered all over the city, just sleeping in the streets. we saw some as young as 6-7 and small groups together, and were unfortunate enough to even see a couple of these kids with missing limbs, that defo hadnt healed properly, wasnt good at all. We covered all the suggested ¨must see¨ sights in the first day, which we didnt expect, but turns out theres not that much to really do in Sao Paulo.
No one speaks a word of english here, which was unexpected shock, more us being naive maybe, but i can tell you mine and sas first attempt to find somewhere to eat was pretty comical, and not very fruitful. so admitting defeat, settled for some dingy smell cafe thing, on the basis it had pictures on the menus, providing adequate pointing prompts clues we needed.:-). With absolutely no sign of any other travelers to provide words of wisdom, on night life etc, sam and i spent the first night in our room, with a load of beers and card games, and good old fashioned conversation. the view from our room was um...interesting to say the least. we looked directly out onto about 100 apartments across the road, and vice versa. at one point we took it upon ourselves to appreciate such views, and thats were we saw ¨naked¨ man. some Brazilian dude, just standing in his front room, curtains open, infant of his TV, totally starkers. Nice. needless to say we quickly returned to the card game, and soon after drew our first day to a close.
