After 11 days on the cruise, we disembarked from the ship at Copenhagen, capital of Denmark. We have spent three days here again staying at a private place but this time we are staying with the owner, Bertrand, who is of similar age to ourselves.
The apartment is right in the city centre so we have walked our way around the city but also mastered the metro and buses. Copenhagen is the cycling capital of the world and it's been a real eye opener as to what that really means. There are thousands and thousands of bikes on the road at one time and with separate bike lanes quite apart from the roads, it makes cycling so safe. Not that I would not wear a helmet! It made me think that Christchurch has such an opportunity right now to design their city's roads in a similar fashion and bring cycling back to their city. So many young parents transport their babies and children in a variety of bike carriers and in the cold wet weather we had, I felt quite sorry for them
There is a movie attached that we took standing on a corner around 4.30pm which shows the amount of bikes coming through in one change of lights. Amazing!
We found two fabulous food markets just up the road and had the best cup of coffee in 3 weeks. The local produce and delicacies were wonderful and we bought dinner there to bring home and heat up - coq a vin, mashed potato, salad and a baguette. Quite French not Danish! But finding food to heat/cook when we're moving around so much is quite challenging. And it's quite expensive here.
The weather in Copenhagen has not been great. Our first full day it rained a lot and was freezing - 9deg but very damp and we had to keep ducking inside somewhere just to warm up. Luckily it was sunny the next day though still very cold. Only last week that had a couple of 27deg days. We have visited a couple of big public gardens, toured the Carlsberg brewery, explored the old port areas of Nyhavn and Christianshavn, walked down many streets looking at shops, cafes etc. We also walked to the top of the "Our Saviour's Church" which is a 300 year old baroque church with an outside twisted staircase at the top. What a view from the top!
Onto Helinsgor north of Copenhagen ....
