Where I stayed
An eleven hour flight and straight into the deep end. Hong Kong, hard not to have an opinion really, good or bad. Unsurprisingly our impressions were mixed, perhaps in part because of jet lag and the disorienting nature of the most vertical city on earth.
We were told before our travels that the city was set around a stunning harbor. Indeed this may have been the case, thou it was hard to appreciate with such a pronounced human footprint and an unyieldingly smog, courtesy of mainland China. That said we found it a surprisingly functional place, with a public transport system that got us around with ease. Most enjoyable were the old trams that rattled along Hong Kong at a brisk pace and a cheap price. Very handy as where we stayed was a bit off the "beaten track" in the Western districts and needed to bail out to do anything.
Particularly noticeable, if more than a touch unappealing, was the overt and excessive commercial nature of the place
The food had its moments, most of them either mediocre or over priced. A pity as we know that there is some excellent food about, should you know where to look, as one tidy little BBQ pork bun hinted excitedly at. By the time we were about to fly out both of us were over carbs and mystery meat and craving some decent vegetables.
