Day 131 Washington DC 2nd day
We had chosen to be first in line at the aerospace museum and set off to be in the Mall at around 9:20am to discover they didn't open until 10am, and get this, there is no Starbucks in the area and a small McDonalds cart didn't sell tea, how sad is this area? J
We waited until 10 then walked up to the chosen museum, we book into the Imax for the two shows we had decided to see and then had another short look around some sections of this really interesting collection of Space exploration pods and equipment, we took in the 3D version of the sun movie, filmed and explained because NASA has two satellites giving twin pictures enabling the scientists to observe the sun erupting energy, which causes weather patterns in space and on earth to shift and change.
Yesterday we had made contact with a friend of Ricks, (Karisue) and had arranged to meet with her at 12:30 for lunch.
We took in a few more of the sections of the museum to wait until Karisue made contact.
It is not possible to create in words the amount of exhibits and the different sections available to be wandered in and out, around and through.
A lot of hands on sections, to feel or see the effects of air pressure, telescopes, light spectrums and so much more.
Karisue turned up and it had been ten years plus since Rick and her had seen each other, but like true friends, picked up as if nothing had changed.
We were kindly taken to a lunch in the Art Gallery section of the museums, and thank Karisue for this treat, we wandered through this museum amongst some wonderful and priceless paintings before heading back to the airspace museum in time for us to take in the other Imax movie about flying.
We have been invited to have a personal tour of the Washington Post tomorrow given by Karisue, we are looking forward to that experience.
We continued the tour of this museum until close to closing, seeing nearly every section, yet not really being able to absorb the information because of the sheer magnitude of the exhibits and information available.
A trip home, on a familiar track, (without the side track to the Chinese Restaurant) to have dinner and catch up on the washing.
Interesting, we have been one and half days in Washington and have yet to leave the Smithsonian institute, and yet to see all the available museums.
We intend to stay here for another two nights to allow us to take the bus about and catch the other sites in and around Washington, such as; The White House, Lincoln memorial, Arlington Cemetery to name but a few.
The weather here is very hot and humid, with the walk around the museums a welcome relief from the outside temps.
