Day 110 Montreal Canada - Canaan Maine USA
We chose to move East then South into the USA, we had decided we had enough of the part of Canada that chooses not to speak English or sign post in at least dual language.
The route took us through some country side and small villages of Quebec, really nice and pleasant views, houses, lawns all well kept. We stopped off at a small town called East Angus, yes a small dot on the map, we went looking for an information centre to have morning tea and also find a rest rooms. Gee we reckon that is not too much to ask, the travellers figured, WRONG! The information centre (an old converted railway station), it was closed, upon asking two old guys sitting outside, we struck a shrug of the shoulders and "non comprehend"
Oh gee restrooms, washrooms, bathrooms, toilette? Whatever! shouldn't be too hard one would think? Gee WRONG again, without "graphic demonstrations" it wasn't working.
Never mind there is a Post office just up the road, head there and ask a young female (approx 18y/o) the same question, the answer back in French was "OH Resturante," and points to a restaurant>
The boyfriend arrives and the question is posed again, he speaks a little English, but also points to the restaurant and says they have them in there. Not a good answer.
Oh well we had spotted an IGA back along the road and most grocery stores have public washrooms, we drove back to the IGA and found the washrooms, great, mind you with a door that cannot be locked, so we set sentry's outside and made use of the washrooms and headed out.
Well it appeared Mandy and the driver had a small dispute, the route direction posted was different than Mandy was attempting to direct us towards.
So taking Mandy's advice we ended up doing a round the blocks until we headed down the direction and road the driver originally chose, at times we wonder why we dispute Mandy's advice!
Never mind we head on down our back route towards "Freedom" and American English speaking people!
We stopped over for lunch at the information centre at a small town called Lambton.
A point to note here, is these small towns in rural Quebec, they all have an extremely large churches built back anywhere between 150 - 200years ago in stone and they dominate the town centre.
We continued along our route and did the right hand turn to take us south towards Maine, another border crossing, not a busy crossing, yet we were subjected to a lot of questions including a check of the paper work for the vehicle, as well as an onboard inspection by the customs/boarder control. Just an interesting border crossing in comparison to all the other crossings we have made.
We travelled south along a relatively narrow highway south and found a rest stop for another break, and then south towards a small town in Maine called Canaan.
We have managed to find on the net the nearest Super Wal Mart, gee only 15 miles away. Let's shop and fill the fridge and pantry with real food!
