Day 99 Chicago Illinois - Detroit Michigan
We chose to head towards Detroit in Michigan and attempt to avoid the freeways and tollways to slip south of Chicago. Our experience of the tollways and freeways in or around Chicago left us with this desire to avoid them.
The back roads took us around small country side towns and farmlands with no stand out features, the use of Earnie with the map, coupled with Mandy being reprogrammed on the move we managed to slip the gauntlet of tolls and avoid the jammed packed freeways.
We eventually found a freeway that was moving and heading our direction, this one was the most direct route to Detroit. One could ask a question here, "why Detroit?" if you read the lonely planet book it certainly has no stand out features to attract us, the only notable possibility was the Ford Museum, so we headed towards this city and it was on the way east towards Niagara falls which is of course a "must See" destination for the travellers.
We found the pace on the freeway somewhat frantic, but, the Castle managed to hold it's own, The maximum speed was posted at 70 mph, trucks 60mph, MINIMUM speed 55mph. Of course we are not sure whether the Castle is a truck or a car, we travelled along "somewhere in between"
The amount of big trucks along this route made the driving a little challenge at times, but between the team in the Castle we arrived at our chosen KOA park in good time.
Mind you again the time zone has deleted an hour from us.
