Day 86 Cody Wyoming
The decision to have a look around this town became another overnight stay.
We drove back into town had put some photos in to be put on disc, Wal-Mart put the photos off the memory card onto disc for $2.50. that has saved a lot of stress in the IT department, it does mean the photos will be posted a little behind the entries but that is not a new thing, J
From here we headed to the Old Town that was the original site Bill Cody planned for the town site. This has been rebuilt with old buildings from around the Old Western Towns around this area. They have been relocated and they are authentic, fitted out with memorabilia of the past including some old wagons in the street as well as the cabin that butch Cassidy lived in for a while, it also includes the cabin that Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid held one of their meetings in as well as the hole in the wall cabin.
IT must be mentioned here that it is good we could go in these cabins. Reason; We walked out of one to cross the road and next thing Rick is being a Cry baby saying "ouch, ouch ouch," and rubbing his back side up high, He reckoned something was biting him, he ducked back in the open doorway to immediately drop his shorts to rid himself of the offending creature!
Well gee, no marks, no bites, no creature, just Rick with his pants down. The fellow travellers will not let him forget his being a cry baby, but he was relieved that the whatever it was, no longer there.
Yes our life on the road is full of laughs and fun, we all do enjoy the little mishaps and funny things, Rick reckons Karon is privileged to have some one drop his pants for her in 100 year old cabins, Karon has her own opinion about that! Earnie is still talking about Rick's early years in Rugby Union habits!
A truly remarkable walk along boardwalks of the past in a real cowboy town, they have relocated some of the bodies of some of the well known cowboys to rest in this town.
We then drove to the Buffalo Bill Museum. This is 5 different museums in one, one covers the land and nature, the next covers the Buffalo Bill legends and truths, (His nick name from William Cody became Buffalo Bill because at one stage William Cody had a contract to supply Buffalo meat to the army and the Army paid his Buffalo Bills, so he became known as Buffalo Bill Cody.
The man was a legend in life as well as an ongoing tribute to himself and the town left behind that carries his name. A most interesting collection of personal belongings and household goods combined with the stage coach used in his shows as well as photos and tributes from the many people he knew and worked with.
We had to have a break from museum reading and absorbing so headed to the Castle had lunch and then to the information centre to plan our next destination on our journey.
Then back to the museum to go through the Plains Indian section a short diversion through the Western art section, and finally to the firearm section. The plains Indian section was again wonderfully presented and very informative, and the firearms section was a bit of an eye opener to see so many manufacturers and the arms developed over the period of time from the early days of 1500 through to modern day times. Mind you Karon did not make a lot of friends when she stated that a "gun is just a gun" and she was heading to the gift shop. An all American male Bikie person looked around aghast and made some comment not believing anyone could make such a statement about a "gun being just a GUN"
This day was so well spent and enjoyable we decided we would stay the night at another RV park in the town rather than the KOA (it is a bit out of town) and take in the Gunfight show set up outside the hotel that Buffalo Bill bought in around 1909 for his Daughter Irma.
We wandered down to this show and enjoyed it along with many others sitting along the sidewalk. We mention here we keep running into fellow Aussie travellers, Last night we sat behind four Australians at the rodeo, and when they asked at the gunfight show if there were any people from foreign country's, of course Rick (having earlier spotted a couple of Aussie hats similar to Earnie's) gives the Aussie! Aussie! Aussie! shout! Immediately a chorus of OI! OI! OI! Is the response. We kid you not it is so Automatic it is out before we know it. BUT it did show that we Aussies can be patriotic as well!
We enjoyed the mock gunfight and show, wandered off down the main street to find a Grandmas family feed restaurant, ate our selections and headed home. We mention here that the smoke haze from the fire we encountered in the Park has caught up with us and the smoke created a red sun affect as it was setting this evening, a very noticeable thing in our walk downtown. The waitress in the restaurant explained that this was a better year than last year this is the first fire they have encountered.
Of course Rick cannot walk past a 50% off hat (maybe third time lucky for hats for him) he now sports a real cowboy hat bought in Cody Wyoming with a beaded Indian hat band included! How Cool is THAT! Mind you Earnie reckons someone will be happy to receive a new hat shortly. Photos to be posted asap
Well back to the Castle to shower and flick through the 67 available channels, and on the road again tomorrow most likely on highway 16 towards South Dakota and eventually Mount Rushmore.
Obviously we will keep you posted.
