Day 50 Alaska
Day 50 Yukon - Alaska just across the border
Last night we met some Canadian RVer's on the sites behind us. Dean, Bobbie, Robert and Carol. They have done some extensive travelling both here and also overseas to NZ and Australia.
This morning we packed up and rolled the castle to the information centre in Whitehorse. The information centre was well laid out with a great amount of information available.
We managed to obtain a free road map of the Yukon to add to our collection, it also gave us more detail of the roads to allow us to make a better choice.
We left and again drove along the Alaskan highway, this in itself was an experience!
It was ok for a good stretch and we made good time, until we came to the roller coaster bits, We kid you not, the road had numerous sections marked with little orange flags. The road dips and has pot holes with variations that would match the rides in Disneyland.
We are getting good at the "Bear Spotting game" the key is to watch for any vehicles pulled up on the road.
We managed to have two great sightings today; one being a smaller brown/grizzly who decided to many people were watching him. The second was a bigger bear and we managed to get some photos on both cameras. (I mention here Nicole we have succeeded in managing the camera Thankyou)
The road did not improve even with them working on it, at one stage we were held up for ten minutes waiting for the pilot car, (they have a pilot car at road works to escort you through if there is one lane closed, it has flashing lights and a big sign written "Follow Me" Of course rick doesn't help his fellow passengers when he breaks into song" Follow me I'm the pied piper, follow me....." " gee don't you love the 60's music !" lol if you are old enough to know it!
We pulled into Beaver creek the last Canadian "town" before crossing the border. We chose to fill with Gas and maybe stay because it had been a long day with the road works and the constant roller coaster ride.
The RV park associated with the gas station was a little "worn" so climb aboard and cross the border and see what turns up.
We crossed the border back into the USA with no problems and found a park around ten miles in. Here we are, not 5 star but adequate and a little step above Beaver Creek.
Tomorrow Anchorage, the real target of Alaska.
