We were reminded again of Kiama, as the breathtaking scenery of the rolling green hills meeting the coastline came into view. The small town of about 5000 has good facilities and a very welcoming feel.
We discovered an absolutely fantastic van park called The Observatory. It's located at the top of a ridge and offers 360 degree panoramic views over dairy farms, forest and ocean.
First stop on our tourist drive was Denmark Farmhouse Cheese Factory, which had been recommended over the one at Margaret River. We were able to taste at least 20 cheeses and 8 fudges. After savouring a cheese platter (Keith had coffee) on the rustic verandah, we loaded the car with the produce we'd bought and continued on.
Our obvious avoidance of wildlife parks was weighing heavily on the girls. We'd pretty much seen it all in the wild, but we finally relented when we arrived at the alpaca farm. Two hand-reared joeys are on view at the front gate, making it extremely difficult not to pay the entry fee to the farmyard. We had free reign once inside and enjoyed doing all the usual handling and feeding of chicks, rabbits, guinea pigs, goats etc. The alpacas were extremely friendly, but not very well mannered.
Lauren's jaw dropped when we came across Green's Pool. It would have to be a perfect spot for safe swimming and snorkelling. By this time the weather was trying hard to improve, but we'd given up on the idea of swimming and hadn't packed a thing.
The beaches are pristine and are obviously a drawcard for holiday makers. We were told that the best time to visit to avoid rain would be February and March.
If the weather had been better, we would have extended our stay, as we fell in love with Denmark.
